Why preconception counselling is essential

Preconception counselling is especially important for couples who have experienced complicated births or have experienced early pregnancy loss in the past and need reassurance that everything has been done to avoid future complications.

Additionally, preconception counselling is vital for couples who have conditions that can affect pregnancy, such as epilepsy, diabetes and other genetic conditions.

What to expect during preconception counselling

During your first consultation, Dr Tshimanga will ask you questions to get to know you a bit better, and he will discuss your expectations for the pregnancy as well as your preferences around the birth and delivery.

During the consultation, Dr Tshimanga will get a better understanding of your:

  • Family history to find out if there are any risks of genetic disorders and to determine if any tests need to be taken.
  • Your medical history to discuss any medication or current conditions that may have an effect on your pregnancy.
  • Your OB/GYN history, such as previous contraception use and previous pregnancies, to rule out the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and any previous uterine abnormalities.
  • Current lifestyle factors such as diet, nutrition, weight, stress, environmental factors and smoking habits.

Dr Tshimanga will also do a physical exam to assess your vitals, heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing, sa well as a pelvic exam.
